CLOVIS -- Since 1992, Fresno State has been required by federal law to compile annual statistics about crime on the campus and to provide them to their students and staff members.

UC Berkeley has been in the top four, nationwide, in student crimes involving alcohol, drugs and weapons. Fresno State is developing local concern for the trend it has develeoped in the areas of drug dealing, alcohol, weapons, student burglaries, sex crimes, aggravated assault, and car thefts.

Arrests for drug offenses on University campus rose sharply in the past three years. Arrests for underage drinking or other alcohol-related offenses also went up markedly, The Clovis Free Press has found. Although some recent studies indicate that drug use by students has increased only slightly in this decade, aggressive policing and a greater willingness among students to report drug infractions by their peers have raised the arrest rate, officials say.
